Be who you would follow

(You say you want a revolution part 4)

Have you ever been driving on a narrow road and looked at both sides and realized there is a sizable ditch to both your right and your left?

That realization causes you to sit up a little straighter and pay a bit more attention! It certainly should prevent even the most chronic driving text messenger to put the phone down!

I think we are on a narrow road when it comes to leadership in the church in North America.

In fact, may of us have already fallen into one ditch or the other.

  • Ditch one is rejecting most leadership assuming it can’t be trusted.
  • Ditch two is clinging too tightly to leaders who we think have the answers.

Because so much is changing in the landscape of the church, slipping into one of these ditches is easy to do.

  • If we fall into ditch one – we don’t get anywhere, leadership can be done in teams with many voices at the table, but it has to be done.
  • If we fall into ditch two – we fail to continue to think for ourselves. More importantly, we don’t seek God on our own for God’s leadership in our own lives and families.

I recently outlined the five things I see in people who ARE going to be a part of the current revolutionary change we are experiencing in the church in North America.

One of the main actions I see in true revolutionaries is this:

They learn to trust leaders and to earn the trust of those they lead.

Find people that you believe you can trust to be leaders of this adaptive change environment.

Then be the kind of leader that others can trust.

The people who I admire most for leading The Church through change have mentors and voices they’ve carefully selected and THEN become a mentor and voice who can be respected.

Bucking ALL authority is immature and shows a lack of understanding of how little any one of us knows on our own.

We all can lead and we all need to be led.

Prayerfully discern the types of leaders that are worth following.

Then be the type of leader who you would follow!
