Give Yourself a Gift This Summer

Rest

Give Yourself a Gift This Summer

When I finished grad school I got myself a graduation gift.

I bought myself a hammock.

I would finally have enough time to put my feet up and REST!

Of course, that was easier said than done. Buying the hammock didn’t automatically lead to a life with intentional rest.

However, with some intentionality I have been able to find rhythms of rest in the midst of my work life.

My definition of “rest” is this:

Whatever it is that gives you life, energy and fills you up so you can live your purpose.

  • Laying on the hammock on a nice day is restful for me.
  • However, as an extravert, so is BBQing with some friends.
  • Reading a book.
  • Walking my dog.

These are all things that give me rest.

When we don’t make space for rest in our lives… we are depleted and don’t live out our purpose.

When we make space for rest in our lives… we are empowered to live out our purpose.

Then we will have the space to look for what God is doing around us in the places where we rest, work and play!

Some of us have been stepping intentionally into our neighborhoods this summer in an activity called The Neighborhood Crawl (Download the Map Here).

This week – try doing a restful activity… OUT in your neighborhood!

Give yourself a gift this summer… the gift of REST!

Maybe you even need to buy your own hammock.

Or…

Read a book at the park.

Go for a walk through the neighborhood.

Rest in a chair in the front yard.

BBQ with friends in a public location.

Intentionally place yourself where you will be able to observe the sights, sounds and people that make your neighborhood unique!

Jesus lived with more purpose than any human that ever lived… yet he offers this invitation to us is to come and rest:

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. – Jesus
